Cheney Bucks promote local businesses!

Members of the Cheney Area Chamber of Commerce have launched a campaign to support local merchants.

“Buy Local, Shop Local, Cheney First” will encourage people to support locally-owned businesses.

“We need to keep our merchants viable. We need to educate people the value of buying at home,” said Randall Oliver, Cheney city administrator.

He said locally owned businesses are the backbone of small communities.

“The money you spend in Cheney stays here,” Oliver said. “Sixty-eight dollars out of $100 stays here. With a chain, only about $45 stays here.”

Recent business closures have many local community concerns. In the couple of years, Goddard has lost its pharmacy, hardware store and grocery. It’s been announced that Andale’s grocery store will soon close.

The first part of the campaign is the introduction of “Cheney Bucks.”

Cheney Bucks can be purchased and used with Chamber members. They will be able to be used for groceries, gasoline and even city bills.

Cheney Bucks are available at City Hall. For a limited time, shoppers can purchase $100 in Cheney Bucks for just $90, or $50 in Cheney Bucks for just $45. The promotion is being sponsored by the Chamber and several local businesses. Shoppers are limited to purchasing $200 in Cheney Bucks.
